6 Benefits of a reading habit!

"I find reading really boring!". Is this what you say when someone asks you to read? If yes, please read on (I am hoping you'll stick around till the end) because I hope to change your attitude by the end of this blog article and you'll  say "I want to explore reading"! If you're a reader already you'll love this one. :) I am going to explain the 6 benefits of reading habit (please don't ask me "why six?") that I think most of us either don't know or prefer to ignore.

By reading I mean not only your academic books or the non fiction books but also about fiction, literature, poetry etc. In fact, the real change happens when you read the above mentioned genres.

You could ask, "how the hell does an imaginary book and a story help me?". Well, the answer is "In many ways you never imagined". No, I am not going to be preachy here or tell you what you already know. I will share what I think is more important to understand and my aim, here, is to inculcate a reading culture in young minds.

The beautiful by-products of a reading habit are as follows:

1. Perspective - Stepping into someone else's mind!

This is applicable to all types of books. When you read a book you're essentially stepping out of your mind and entering somebody else's. Isn't that interesting? You start looking at a particular situation with a different lens and see what you would not have seen otherwise.

2. Empathy-   Feel what the other person is feeling

This is an attribute which is crucial for everyone living in a society. Unfortunately, this trait is hard to find. Researches have been conducted on people to test the premise and results have clearly shown an increase in mirroring of each other's thought and speech habits. A person who reads, actually, goes through the same pain or pleasure which the character in the story goes through. Eventually, you become less judgemental and more empathetic over time.

3. Imagination Boundaries of the imagination expoldes!

I don't think I really need to expand on this. We have so many good stories out there which are so creative and imaginative, full of imaginary creatures, unbelievable plots etc. So you see that reading about such stories again and again unconciously expands one's creativity and imaginative capabilities.

4. Excercise for brain- Reading is to brain what physical workout is for body

Absolutely true! One more reason to start the excercise today. It is essential to keep your brain active and reading books is definitely one of the best ways to do the same. Various studies have shown an increased activity in different areas of the brain when a person reads. This excercise carried over a long time period ensures that our brains remain younger and active.

5. Stress Reduction-  Alleviates stress, depression.

Stress is one of the major causes of many diseases today. We need to keep this thing at bay at all times to lead a healthy life. Reading, magically, helps with this as well. You can pick up a book that suits your mood of the day and experience the emotions that rise and fall with each passing chapter. Again, research studies have shown that this excercise reduces stress and improves the mental health of a person.

6. Personal development- Growth happens and personality develops.

Stories and characters influence the readers a lot. You need to be a reader to experience the same. They motivate, inspire, pull you out from darkness and can strengthen your spirit. Overall personality development is a natural phenomenon in people who are voracious readers.

There are other benefits such as improved writing skills, knowledge and vocabulary expansion, improved concentration, improvement in attention span etc. Now you know why greatly successful people around the world such as Bill Gates, Elon Musk, Shah Rukh Khan, Satya Nadella and many more read a lot of books!

Hope you'll also start your reading journey today. Let me know in the comments section if you're a reader or want to be one.

Happy reading!
